Hey there guys! This is my proudest DIY ever cuz the results turned out super cute:D I think I need to thank my grandma for this one cuz when she taught me how to use the sewing machine, she actually let me experiment with her denim pant legs thing and I was inspired to do this #RDIY after one year and a half. Yes, I only learnt how to sew with a sewing machine for nearly 18 months. I struggled a lot and I know how you guys feel.
Here is the sewing part of this #RDIY:(It is on Youtube.)

- So take your zip and some thread that is the same colour as your zip and pass the thread into your needle.
- First of all, take your zip(I recycled mine from an old pencil box. I cut out the zip with a pair of scissors.) and thread. Poke your needle through the fabric area of the zip and then pass it through the left or right end of the fabric. Pull the thread to make the zip stick to the denim. *Note that if your denim isn't hemed, please do so by zig-zag sewing or just basic stitching along the folded edges.
- If you have any doubts on this, here is the antidote: How to Finish Up Raw Edges by secretlifeofabionerd
- Before proceeding to the next step, stop for a second and look at this. Did you buy your zip or recycle it like I did? If you recycle it. PAY 100% ATTENTION TO THIS. Can you see the thread in between the two sides of the zip? You need to do this step too. Why? To stop the slider from sliding off the zip. I know it sounds funny. prevent the SLIDER FROM SLIDING. This is because when you cut the zip,you might have cut off the top stops and bottom stops. If you have the stops just ignore this step.
- For today's sewing part, we are going to ditch the sewing technique we learnt before this and use another technique I call the "loops".
- I want to use this sewing technique as it holds the zip better and conceal the raw edges of my zip. I didn't have enough space to hem it:(
- First knot the end of your thread and poke it through the start of the edge.
- Then , let the needle fly across the fold of the fabric and poke your needle through the same side of the fabric you started or in other words where your knot is and pull it out.
- See the little loop?
- That is how you do it. Just keep sewing till the end of the edge. Cut, double knot and cut of any excess. Repeat for the other side.
- (P.S When you are sewing avoid sewing near, on, across or accidentally looping the teeth or you will have to cut, knot and cut when you try to zip the pencil case close and it doesn't work.) I found it out the hard way, so PAY ATTENTION TO THIS or it is super frustrating.
- After sewing everything. Do not worry about your stitches not being prefect cuz I got a way to make it look amazing.
- Take some lace and wrap it around you denim pencil case. Measure out how much you need and cut out any excess.
- Take your hot glue gun, fabric glue or even needle and thread if you want to do it by hand out.
- Just glue or sew the lace onto the edge of your fabric and make sure it covers up your stitches.
- After that, you can take any cute gems, studs, buttons or even fabric cut outs and glue or sew them onto your pencil case to add a pop of colour.
Be creative you can also write stuff on a light coloured fabric with Sharpies and glue the fabric on top. It doesn't really matter, just be you and do it your way. I really value each and everyone's personal style and way of thinking because each and everyone of us is different like snowflakes.
